Community is the cornerstone of our civilization. So it should come as no surprise that the World Wide Web has exploded into communities, large and small. While they may vary in every conceivable way, at their core, each on is just a gathering of people sitting around a camp?re, telling each other stories. It was around just such a camp?re that I met Patrick, and so it seem ?tting that I’m here introducing his ?rst book, which just so happens to about managing your own community.
Building your own community can be one of the most enjoyable journey
you can take as a Webmaster. You are giving people a place to meet and
connect, share their ideas and thoughts, and build relationships that grow ou
of common experiences. Building a community is about creating a fun, saf
place that encourages expression and conversation.
As a professional programmer myself, I’ve always found the technica
aspects of running a community pretty simple. But if you aren’t a programme
then you and Patrick have a lot in common! He couldn’t program his way ou
of a paper bag. So it’s a good thing that you don’t need to know how to
program to run your own community. Inside the pages of this book, Patrick
gives you great insight into all the skills you’ll need to get up and running and
manage your community. This includes managing users, an area where you
are likely to spend most of your time and a subject I’ve learned a lot abou
from Patrick over the years.

There’s a world of difference between these two very real Internet experiences. Yet they provide a window into the landscape of web survival that plays out daily. Success is the result of a multitude of adaptations to this constantly changing environment. The fate of companies worldwide is at stake, yet few players grasp the full scope of the problem. Fewer still can clearly and thoroughly articulate its solution: website optimization.

Ultimately, website optimization (WSO) is about maximizing the (usually financial) return on a website investment. Research shows that attaining that ultimate goal is dependent upon fulfilling a set of known benchmarks, including making the site easier to find, easier to use, faster, more aesthetically pleasing, cheaper to run, and more compelling. Site stakeholders need accurate resources that spell out best-in-class, proven strategies and methods to reach those benchmarks, and thereby attain success.
I wrote this book to fill this need. By reading it, you will learn a comprehensive set of optimization techniques for transforming your website into a more successful profit-generation machine. You’ll save money by shifting your marketing budget from hit-or-miss mass marketing to highly targeted, online marketing with measurable results.

In the early days of the web, when people first started properly to embrace the technology , to publish homepages, and to develop online corporate presences for their companies, they all realized fairly quickly that the medium was quite limiting. Necessity is the mother of invention, though. People began to coax out of their web pages tricks and displays that were never intended by the technologies they used, and the browsers helped them along the way by adding features that offered even more opportunities for this kind of behavior.

Numerous books have been written on the topics of web design and programming, as have many free tutorials that you can read on the ’Net. Many of them were written during those heady years, and were based on what seemed like best practices back then, but their authors were constrained by browsers that often rendered the same well-designed pages in vastly different ways. This meant that the tutorials’ authors needed to resort to abusing various features of those browsers, such as using data tables to lay out pages. This certainly got many people building their first web pages, but it ensured that bad habits were ingrained at an early stage, and many people are still using these bad practices years later. Web developers the world over have learnt bad habits (myself included) and must now try to un-learn them all. There’s no longer a need for these practices—they often produce pages that are inflexible, slow to download, and difficult to maintain, but like the badly taught driver who insists on flouting the rules because it’s worked for him so far, many developers find those outdated habits difficult to break.

Over the past several years, JavaScript has undergone some serious changes while simultaneously becoming more and more important to both developers and users of the Web. By now, people just expect pages to be
interactive, and it’s up to you, the web developer, to meet those expectations and, when possible, exceed them. Say you went to a web site today and encountered an item—a video, a story, a photo, a download—and next to that item’s title was a five-star rating system with an invitation for you to click a star to rate it. Without thinking about it, you’d expect to be able to click the star of your choice and see the rating change. It might not surprise you if the page reloaded to ask you to register or log in, but the next time you rated something, you’d expect the rating to change to match your choice. But if every time you clicked a star the whole page reloaded, you’d feel something was wrong. Maybe you wouldn’t be able to put your finger on it (most users certainly wouldn’t think JavaScript or Ajax might be behind the problem), but
something would feel odd.
The users who visit your site will have expectations that the site behave like the others they go to, and if yours doesn’t, even if it looks great and has awesome content, it’ll feel old. This might not drive people from using your site, but it will certainly result in less usage of the features you
develop. To meet these expectations, you’ll find that you can’t do it with the skill sets traditionally required to build a web site. Back-end developers of Java, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, and so forth often find writing JavaScript to be tedious and fraught with frustration when dealing with the browser quirks, while the people who spend most of their time working on the client side—creating the design, HTML, CSS, and image—often don’t have a lot of serious programming experience.

Coming to web development with a blank slate can be pretty intimidating. There are a lot of things to learn about the proper construction of a website. The most successful websites have a great deal of thought and work put into them before they’re even put into production. Although it can be scary, there has never been a better time to get started than the present. Web browsers are finally starting to reach a point where they all follow standards (more or less).
You have to do less fiddling with things to get them working properly now than ever before. We don’t want to jinx it, but we think we can finally start letting our guard down a bit and start trusting browser manufacturers more (yes, even Microsoft).

This book offers a brief history of the World Wide Web and then walks the reader through several chapters on each of the areas relevant to developing a website. Each chapter covers a separate process or technology relevant to working with the Web today. Readers learn about planning a website, managing the design and development process, and developing using web standards; we also provide an overview of server-based technologies.
